Dr. William Trenkle Serving as Acting Director of the
Division of Investigative Oversight*
ORI is pleased to announce that Dr. William Trenkle is serving as the Acting Director of the Division of Investigative Oversight (DIO), effective November 11, 2017. Dr. Trenkle will temporarily fill the position vacated by Dr. Susan Garfinkel, whose last day at ORI was November 10, 2017. Dr. Garfinkel has provided dedicated service to ORI for nearly 15 years, most recently as the Director of DIO. She leaves a legacy of collaboration with institutional officials, exemplified by her as steadfast support of the RIO boot camps, and of training and supervision of DIO scientist investigators and staff. Her expertise will be greatly missed by ORI.
Dr. Trenkle received his BS from Alma College and his PhD in organic chemistry from UC Irvine. He received postdoctoral training at Harvard University. Dr. Trenkle was on the faculty at Brown University from 2002-2007 and then served as the Director of the Chemical Biology Core Facility at NIH from 2007-2012. He came to ORI as a scientist investigator in 2012. Dr. Trenkle is well-prepared to serve in this position, with a strong background as a scientist and as a scientist investigator. ORI looks forward to working with him in this new role.
Institutional officials with questions about research misconduct cases, policies and procedures should continue to contact ORI through the AskORI@hhs.gov mailbox and case-related issues will be forwarded to Dr. Trenkle.
